About

Rugby Development has been a huge part of my career. I have been extremely fortunate to work with experienced coaches from the community and professional ends of the game. These coaching and mentoring experiences have helped develop and shape my knowledge and skills throughout the last 13 years. The skills and attributes that i have developed I use to enhance the BSc Rugby Coaching and Performance students.
I was fortunate enough to obtain my UKCC Level 1, 2 and 3 qualification at the age of 19. This was an achievement I am very proud of but the experiences of coaching for 13 years with professional rugby organisation such as Rhondda Schools Rugby Initiative, Cardiff Blues, the Welsh Rugby Union and within Secondary Education. These various roles has given me a significant understanding of different professional environments and institutions. The wide range of roles and experiences have developed my level of coaching and appreciation of the game, managerial skills, analytical communication, administration and facilitation skills to become a more rounded rugby practitioner.

My role as Technical Demonstrator is to bring my industry experiences from the community, participation and performance experiences into the lectures and practicals. These real life experiences working as a Rugby development officer, working within RAG or in semi professional rugby clubs helps the students have a greater understanding of the challenges and expectations within these rugby roles. Being a WRU coach educator I have the skills and knowledge to help develop students on their UKCC Level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications which is built into the course. Being able to mentor and provide excellent working placements within the welsh regions, WRU, all education fields and local rugby clubs gives a broad experience of working within these institutions. Providing the links and opportunities students are given a mentor as well as staff support with their personal development. This provision is crucial within developing industry experienced coaches.

Experience

I started my coaching journey as a Cardiff Blues community coach working the primary schools and running children’s rugby camps. I then progressed to become the Rhondda Schools Player development officer which entailed coaching within secondary schools and the district teams 12s, 13s, 14s and 15s.
I have also worked in a number of roles for the WRU, including a Participation Officer, Player Development Officer and the Hub Officer. As well as spending some time working with the Cardiff Blues as a Rugby Development Officer. Within the club game I have coached in the WRU Championship as a Head Coach and the WRU Premiership as a backs attack coach. I have also worked with the RAG 16s and 18s programmes with the Cardiff Blues as a skills attack coach.
