Jay Probert brings two decades of industry experience three years of academic experience to his role as Academic Subject Manager for Sport at the University of South Wales. A former Senior Partnership Manager within the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Trust, his career to date has focused in particular on club development at a grass roots level across Wales.
“It gives me great pride to take up this challenge of empowering students to become the future industry workforce. The Football Development landscape has changed considerably over the past decade with practitioners requiring a comprehensive and diverse set of skills to become employment ready. I relish the opportunity to support students to fulfil their personal goals and enhance their university experience through work based learning opportunities.”
A product himself of the volunteer pathway into the footballing industry, Jay undertook a series of coaching and committee-based roles with his local club before becoming a sessional coach for Fulham FC FITC and Cardiff City FITC, and also South West Division Head Coach for Christ College Secondary School in Brecon.
Subsequently a representative for the FAW on a number of UEFA Grassroots visits throughout Europe, Jay has also directed various leadership courses run by the organisation.
A strategy devised during his studies in MA Sports Management and Leadership to improve centralised support for clubs based locally has since also been prioritised for achievement by Wales’ Club Support Network, a group he continues to play a pivotal role in as an ongoing member.
Jay was course leader for the FdSc Community Football Coaching and Development programme delivered in partnership with the English Football League (EFL) Trust which is delivered via a blended learning platform encompassing both online and residential delivery. This role involved the direct leadership of a large team providing innovative learning materials to a network of over 30 Professional Football Clubs and over 300 students. The course enjoyed national recognition in 2018 through the Times Higher Education Management and Leadership Awards (being shortlisted for the Digital Innovation Award) and the Higher Education Academy Awards (Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence).
