MPhil, BA (Hons)

About

Background

I graduated as a mature student from the University of Glamorgan in 1997 with a BA (Hons) Degree in Humanities (History). I developed an interest in assisting students with their written and study skills when working as a part-time lecturer at Glamorgan. This led me to join the Education Drop-in Centre in 2001. My other interest is in twentieth century women’s history and, in 2003, was awarded an M.Phil. for my thesis entitled ‘A Distinctive Brand of Politics: Women in the South Wales Labour Party, 1918-1939’. I have given a number of conference papers, the majority of which have focused on the construction of women’s political identities, and on forms of historical representations of women. I have also contributed essays to published edited works on women and politics. I am currently working on a Ph.D. which focuses on ‘The Labour Woman’ magazine, 1911-1945.

Responsibilities

My work in the Education Drop-in Centre involves one-to-one tutoring and small group teaching in academic writing and study skills. This largely focuses on encouraging students to develop their analytical, organisational and written capabilities, as well as providing advice on aspects such as referencing, revision and time management. Working at the Centre is a hugely rewarding job that involves great variety in terms of both the diversity of visitors, and the range of subject areas covered there.
