Vanessa is currently a senior lecturer in English and Creative Writing (Scriptwriting) on Caerleon and Treforest campuses. She is module leader for American literature and Special Topics 1 Scriptwriting for screen (television and film). She teaches on the Modern Novel and Celtic literatures as well as the American Literature programmes. She is also module leader for Starting Scriptwriting ( Theatre, Film and Radio) at Treforest.
Vanessa has been Course leader for Applied Drama and module leader for Drama in the Community and Non Western Performance Cultures. She also taught on the MA programme Scriptwriting for Screen Media and the Theatre and MA English programme Rethinking the Real. She has also been module leader for Ways of Writing, Introduction to the Drama, the English Stage and Poetry 1900 to the Present and taught on academic skills (critical approaches), women’s writing, European literature and Post colonial literature modules. Prior to her academic career, Vanessa has worked as a theatre director and dramaturg of new writing primarily directing numerous shows for Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, the London fringe and the Riverfront Theatre, Newport. She has had director attachments with the RSC and the Welsh National Opera and was co-artistic director of Theatr Ffynnon. Whilst living in Amman Jordan, she was Artistic Director of the Royal Theatre Company and established drama departments at junior and senior levels at the Amman Baccalaureate School. She also worked as a feature writer and arts reviewer for an English language newspaper, devised and wrote a thirteen part radio documentary series on the history of musical theatre for Radio Jordan. She has worked as a script reader for BBC Radio 4 and written scripts and lyrics for BBC Wales educational sites online one which won a Welsh Bafta for New Media, non film or television category and another on the Celts which was winner of the Celtic Film Award 2005. She has developed and co wrote libretto and lyrics an educational musical The Forgotten on the Chartist uprising in Wales which draws on Chartist songs and poems of the period and stories from the archives.
Vanessa is member of the SMN (Scientific and Medical Network) Consciousness Studies, BAVS (British Association of Victorian Studies) and British Equity.
Her current research interest and work is in the relationship between storytelling in the dramatic narrative and human consciousness.
