Jonathan graduated with a B.Ed (Hons) degree specialising in music and teaching within a Key Stage 2 setting.
He has taught within the primary sector in schools in Wales and in England and was subject co-ordinator for mathematics and music. Jonathan was appointed to the position of Deputy Head teacher (2004 and again in 2006) in two different schools and worked to successfully raise standards in both settings which was recognised by the education and training inspectorate for Wales (Estyn) and the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted) for the work undertaken.
Jonathan joined the University of Wales, Newport in the autumn of 2008 and has enjoyed teaching across all modules and supporting students in school-based settings. He has been the co-ordinator for school experience since 2010 and has co-authored the sector-leading, ‘SEWCTET School Experience Assessment Framework’. Jonathan works with colleagues across the South East Wales region to continuously improve the partnership between the University and schools. He was awarded with the Vice Chancellor’s Award for ‘Outstanding contribution to the life and work of the University’ in 2011 following nominations from students.
Appointed to the post of ASM/Head of Primary Initial Teacher Education in 2014, Jonathan has been leading colleagues and school partners to design innovative degree pathways for potential students to achieve Qualified Teacher Status.
