Debra Thorne known as Debra Thorne
BSc (Hons), Dip (HE)
I have worked at the University for over 30 years and during this time held various roles in the Polytechnic of Wales, the University of Glamorgan and now the Univesity of South Wales. I am currently the Manager of the Progression and Student Money Team Advice Teams and part of the Student Services Senior Management Team.
My previous roles have been many and varied, from Library Assistant to a Property Inspection Officer to a Student Money Adviser. In recent times I have managed the Student Money Advice Team who, in addition to providing one-to-one support for students on student finance related matters, also deliver significant levels of practical financial support to students via the University Hardship Fund and various scholarships and bursaries. Since August 2017 I have also managed the new Progression Advice Team who support students potentially at risk of withdrawal and non-progression.
I am an accredited member of the National Association of Student Money Advisers (NASMA) and have previously been a member of the NASMA Executive Board, developing and representing NASMA Wales and liaising with the Welsh Government on student funding policy matters.
I have contributed to many Welsh Government policy matters over the years, most recently this has been in relation to the centralization of student support in Wales and also as a member of the national Student Loans Company Stakeholder Group.
