Craig Gill has been a Senior Lecturer in Football Coaching & Performance at USW since 2014 having joined from the Football Association of Wales Trust where he was the National Coach Mentoring Manager, Senior Coach Educator and Assessor, and Elite Player Development Coach. Previously, he enjoyed a rewarding and successful 25 year career in the Royal Air Force as a Physical Training Instructor, Exercise Rehabilitation instructor, Physical Education and Force Development Officer, and played for and coached the RAF and British Forces national teams and those in Cyprus, before retiring in 2011 at the rank of Squadron Leader.
After playing in the Football Combination League for Swansea City, Craig joined the military and played in the Football Conference and Welsh Premier League, and proudly represented Wales at semi-professional level. He has also worked in the Football League at first team and reserve levels as a UEFA Advanced Licenced coach, sports therapist, performance analyst and fitness consultant.
“I have had the pleasure to play and coach in over 30 countries worldwide and in my previous role as the National Coach Mentoring Manager for the FAW Trust, I was fortunate to lead the programme which has mentored many hundreds of coaches including ex-professional players who are now making a second career in the game such as Patrick Vieira, David Ginola, Sol Campbell and Garry Monk, amongst many others.
I think it’s vital to have industry professionals supporting our courses and closely mentoring and challenging our students in order to prepare them for the highly demanding football industry. We are best placed to demonstrate the transition of academic learning into the workplace. USW’s close partnerships with the Football Association of Wales Trust, Cardiff City, Swansea City and various local authority initiatives allow us to use these experienced and forward-thinking experts to demonstrate current trends and modern techniques.
On a weekly basis I see our students apply the theoretical academic research studied in the lecture room onto the training pitch, into the football community and at professional clubs which allows them to stay ahead of the game by being aware of modern trends. By gaining the embedded UEFA and FAW coaching qualifications, compiling a comprehensive work-based experience portfolio and achieving their higher academic qualifications, our students can be extremely competitive in seeking employment in the football industry upon graduation."
