About
Education is central to public and professional understanding of genetics and raising the profile of genetics in the education of health professionals has been an important goal for Maggie since she started her academic career in 1992. Prior to this Maggie practised in the coronary care setting, having made a career move to nursing from the field of mammalian genetics. From 2004 – 2012, following the successful collaborative bid to establish the NHS National Genetics Education & Development Centre, Maggie undertook an additional role as Lead professional specialist for Nursing. At the University of South Wales, Maggie is leader of the Centre for Research & Innovation in Care Sciences and the Genomics Policy Unit (GPU). The GPU was established in 1996 to explore the impact of advances in new genetic technologies on healthcare, assessing the implications for professionals and public alike. Maggie was honoured to be elected as President of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics 2013-2014, only the 2nd non-U.S. nurse to take up this role in ISONG’s 25 year history.
