Public Communication of Science

Biotechnology Outreach Programme

Established in 2002, this programme seeks to inform and educate the wider community, including schools, about the scientific and other issues that underlie modern biotechnology and its application in medicine and agriculture. There is a regular series of Masterclasses in biotechnology for local schools. To date, we have hosted over 30 school groups and hundreds of pupils for day-long visits to the University that include debates on contentious topics like GM crops or human cloning. The programme also includes visits to schools by our students and seminar/debate sessions on biotechnology-related topics. We are evaluating the impact of our activities on the views of pupils by means of questionnaires and statistical analyses for future publication. In January 2003, we launched a new local teacher training initiative with a workshop at the University of Glamorgan on practical techniques for biotechnology education for 15-19 year olds. We have now secured external funding to continue and extend this programme.

Debate on GM crops

We have a high profile in the ongoing debate on GM crops, both locally in Wales and the UK and internationally in Europe/North America and in developing countries, especially in Asia. This involves providing expertise and advice to organisations and government agencies. We also participate regularly in meetings attended by the general public and in media discussions via the press, radio and television.
