Medical simulation technical adviser, with interests in the areas of simulation technology, scenario programming, supraglottic airway devices, and multidisciplinary simulation courses.
Ongoing projects include, developing clinical simulation training courses with Aneurin Bevan Health Board – Accident and Emergency Department (Newport), developing a course for the Specialist Nurse Organ Donation team in Tongwynlais and with the Bristol Medical Simulation Centre in assessing manikins for airway training.
Will complete M.Phil in April 2015 researching acquisition of technical skills in high fidelity simulation using the educational framework, cognitive apprenticeship.
Previously managed the Bristol Medical Simulation Centre for 10 years. Assisted in running industrially sponsored courses (e.g. Abbott Laboratories’ Remifentanil, Aspect BIS, Astra Zeneca GP refresher, Baxter’s Low Flow Desflurane and Boehringer Thrombolysis courses), UK Commercial courses (e.g. Hospital at Night, Transport of the Critically Ill, Human Factors, Junior Anaesthetists, SAAD Dental Emergencies, Difficult Airway Course for Anaesthetists, Paramedics Airway Course) and various internal hospital and university course for the Army/TA, anaesthetists, dentists, emergency medicine, F1/F2 doctors, nurses, ODPs, paediatricians, paramedics, pharmacy and medical students. Over 16 years experience of working with Gaumard, Laerdal and METI medical simulators.
First line of contact for repair and maintenance of 23 simulators. Writing and assisting in design of clinical scenario events for pre and post-registration nurses (some scenarios are from the Programme for Nurse Curriculum Integration (PNCI) package), cardiac students (e.g. Pacing), TA (e.g. gun shot wound), F1/F2 doctors,ODPs and anaesthetists (e.g. anaphylaxis, malignant hyperthermia), paediatrics and miscellaneous specialities such as bioterrorism (e.g anthrax. smallpox). Set up and operation of simulators, METI Vision & Learning Space, TDCK and associated equipment (e.g. Aestiva anaesthetics machine, Philps MP70 monitoring, EVITA 4 BIPAP ventilator etc).
