About

I am a chartered civil engineer and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK). I did my first degree in Nigeria and worked in the construction industry for seven years managing various projects from inception and design through to tender, build and final hand-over. I came to this university originally as a student in 2005, after completing my Master degree in 2006; I joined the university as a staff member (research assistant) in 2007. I then started my doctorate degree in 2008 and completed it in 2010 before progressing to this my current role (Senior Lecturer). I have published circa 34 articles describing and documenting my research work in peer reviewed international journals and refereed international conferences, with more in preparation as well as submitting about three technical research reports to bodies such as the Welsh Assembly Government.

Experience

I have working experience in both public and private sectors, currently, I am involved in both undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and research supervision, and I am currently the Postgraduate Course Leader in Civil Engineering. Summary of my career experience is as follows:
1) Participate in commercial research and innovation, leading to economic development and job creation, attracting research funding.
2) Take part in various initiatives focused towards sustainable construction and collaborating with industries on new product development.
3) Responsible for the management of World Bank Water Rehabilitation project in Africa, involving subsoil investigation, pipeline extension, construction of Braithwaite pressed steel sectional overhead water tanks, overhead line extensions, installation of transformers, booster/submersible pumps and borehole drilling.

I am currently serving as Editor in Chief for the Journal of Plastics and Rubber Advances, Editorial Board Member (Civil Engineering subject area) for the Scientific World Journal, External Expert Adviser to the National Assembly for Wales and I am a former Technical committee member ICE-Wales branch.

I am also a registered member of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic network for Wales (STEM), helping to promote the skills of young learners, actively encourage them to enjoy STEM subjects, and informing them about the unique career opportunities that are available to them, thus, opening up life-changing opportunities for many young people in Wales.

Consultancy

I contribute to the delivery of consultancy projects for the Civil Engineering Research Unit (CERU) and the Centre for Engineering, Research and Environmental Applications (CEREA), facilitating collaborative links with local industry and business here in Wales. In this way, I have provided high quality short and long-term solutions to the technical problems facing these industry and business in a more sustainable manner.

Research

My engineering research interest is on the development of sustainable construction materials using low-energy production methods with techniques that recycle industrial waste to produce a new generation of concrete, mortar and bricks. I undertook fundamental work concerned with the engineering performance, thermal transmittance, microstructure and environmental profiling. I have examined walling materials for building clay masonry units that required minimal heating or cooling, to help reduce the carbon footprint of the building sector in the short and long term and to meet the government sustainability targets in the UK, using various wastes types/by-products materials from the industry. Recent projects have included the Strategic Insight Programme (SIP), the Collaborative Industrial Research Programme (CIRP) and the Knowledge Exploitation Funding (KEF) initiatives.
