I came to nursing as a mature student having previously worked within the brewing industry. During my training I juggled a busy family, study and work and was awarded a first class honours degree for my efforts. I really do believe that you can achieve anything you want to do if you are prepared to work hard enough for it.
I qualified in 2008 from the University of Glamorgan and went straight into Oncology nursing at Velindre Cancer Centre where I worked as a staff nurse. I nursed patients with all types of cancer predominantly Head and Neck cancers delivering their Chemotherapy treatment and supporting them with the side effects. In 2012 I completed a second degree, Cancer Care, and further specialised within my role. Many of my patients at that time were enterally fed and I became a link nurse, providing staff with additional support to manage these patients in their care. In 2012, I left Velindre to took on the role of Community Nutrition Nurse Specialist within Cardiff and Vale UHB supporting patients with a wide range of health issues (including patients with Head and Neck cancers) with their enteral feeding in a Community setting. As a result, I have been integral in establishing systems to support patients, regardless of diagnosis or home setting to manage their enteral feeding as independently as possible. This role has also enabled me to maintain links with Velindre as well as develop good working relationships with colleagues working in a community setting. I am currently working towards a Post Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care and find that my knowledge of a community and acute setting can provide an insight into supporting patients with long term conditions.
