Sera graduated from Jesus College, Oxford with a MA in Modern Languages (German) and Linguistics in 2004. She completed a PGCE (Secondary) in 2005 and taught German, French, Welsh and English at a Welsh-medium school from 2005-2007. As a teacher, Sera gained experience in coaching Sixth Form students with their university applications, expanding on her roles as admissions representative and Lead Ambassador for the Access Cymru Wales scheme she undertook whilst at Oxford. Passionate about inspiring young people to reach their potential, she joined the University of Glamorgan as a Schools and Colleges Liaison Officer in 2007. In this role, she project managed the Schools and Colleges Open Day, led the schools and colleges liaison activity for the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science, as well as the University’s presence in schools and colleges in the South West of England, line managing four freelance HE Advisers in doing so.
Sera progressed to UK Recruitment Manager in 2017 and became Head of UK Student Recruitment in November 2018.
Sera is also a local Councillor for Treorchy Ward. Elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2012 and in 2017, Sera takes great pride in representing her constituents and the area in which she was born and bred. As part of this role, Sera was Chair of Governors of a primary school and is currently a member of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Committee.
Sera has two sons aged 10 and 6 and loves spending time with them in the outdoors, reading, walking, going to the cinema and doing arts and crafts. To relax, Sera enjoys eating out, reading and catching up on TV. She also likes running and has completed the Cardiff Half Marathon twice.
Sera was born and bred in Treorchy, Rhondda and attended Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda (formerly Cymer Rhondda). A graduate of Jesus College, Oxford, and having worked as a student ambassador during her time there, Sera is passionate about widening access to University and beyond, and broadening students’ horizons.
Sera is also a County Councillor for Treorchy Ward, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and has served her community in this role since 2008.
Sera currently leads the UK Student Recruitment Team and the Recruitment Events Team. The former is a frontline team whichis responsible for promoting the University directly to prospective students and key stakeholders such as teachers and advisers. The team delivers an extensive schools and colleges liaison programme throughout Wales, the South West of England and the West Midlands and represents the University at key recruitment events throughout the UK, such as UCAS Conventions. The team’s flagship event is its annual Teachers’ and Advisers’ Conference. Locally, the team works closely with the University’s strategic alliance Partner Colleges to support the progression of students onto USW courses both in the college and on campus. The team also works closely with the Faculty Business Partners and directly with academic staff in delivering targeted, subject-specific schools and colleges liaison activity such as on-campus taster days, masterclasses, revision conferences and teachers’ CPD events, and interactive talks and workshops in schools and colleges.
Typically, the Student Recruitment Team engages with over 16,000 prospective students annually via HE talks and workshops, both on and off-campus.
The Recruitment Events Team was established in April 2019 and leads on the organisation, planning, delivery and evaulation of all of the University’s Recruitment Events, such as Open Days, Applicant Days, Interview Days, Postgraduate and Part-time Open Evenings and Clearing Events. The Recruitment Events Team also arrange all of the logistics of the University’s presence at of-campus UK recruitment fairs.
